Some of our favourite Canmore weddings happen when the mountains hide behind the clouds. Mark and Jen's fall wedding at The Vista with Cornerstone Weddings in Canmore had low mist, soft rain and evergreen forest everywhere you looked, and it turned into one of the most cinematic days we've photographed this season. As a Calgary wedding photographer team that shoots all over the Rockies, we'll take a moody mountain sky over harsh sun any day. Then came two of our favourite reactions of the day: the bridesmaids seeing her for the first time, and her dad.

An umbrella first look overlooking the Rockies

For the first look, Mark waited on a grassy overlook at The Vista, wearing a deep navy suit and holding a clear umbrella, with clouds rolling through the mountains in front of him. When Jen walked up the path in her white gown, framed by conifers and grey sky, the rain made it feel straight out of a film. Their first embrace under that umbrella is one of our favourite rainy day wedding photos of the year.

Private vows overlooking Canmore

Before the ceremony, Mark and Jen read private vows to each other on a quiet meadow above town, with the clouds hanging low over the Three Sisters and the peaks around Canmore. There were happy tears, a few laughs, and the kind of moody mountain light Canmore wedding photographers dream about.

A MOUNTAIN CEREMONY ON THE VISTA TERRACE

The ceremony was set on The Vista terrace, under a triangular arbor draped in white fabric and asymmetrical dried florals in warm rust and amber tones. White chairs lined the wet deck, the peaks sat in the clouds behind the couple, and guests held umbrellas without missing a moment. It's proof that a little Rocky Mountain weather only adds to a Canmore wedding. And that first kiss under the arbor, with the clouds lifting off the peaks behind them, is one for the wall.

Family portraits against the forest and peaks

After the ceremony, we photographed family and the wedding party against the evergreen hills and misty peaks. Navy suits, blush and rust dresses and a few very sweet kids made for portraits that feel classic but warm, including a multi-generation group shot this family will treasure.

A candlelit reception in timber and glass

Inside, The Vista's timber-and-glass reception room glowed. Tables had white linens, terracotta napkins, smoky goblets, candles and green-and-white florals, and glowing "MR & MRS" marquee letters stood against the windows. As the night went on, Mark and Jen shared a quiet dance beside the floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the valley. Then the dance floor took over, from the littlest guests to a bride in sunglasses.
