The Nash (@thenashyyc) is one of my favourite spots in Inglewood, and after 20 years of photographing weddings I can tell you why: history. The Nash lives inside the restored National Hotel, built in 1907 and opened in 1908. It served the neighbourhood as a tavern and a hotel for workers from the nearby rail station, brewery and livery stable. Today it's a recognized local landmark, and it still has the yellow brick, red brick arches and pressed-tin cornice that make it so photogenic.

Inside, the dining room takes its cues from the grand old hotel, and next door is Off Cut Bar, the hotel's grittier alter ego, with a moodier feel. Having both looks under one roof is a gift on a wedding day. We can do bright, elegant portraits in the dining room and then step into a darker, cozier space for something with more drama.

Then there's the neighbourhood itself. Inglewood is Calgary's oldest neighbourhood, and its heritage storefronts, brick walls and leafy streets give us a lot of portrait spots within a short walk. The Bow River isn't far either. I love giving couples a few relaxed minutes to wander with me, because the best moments usually happen between the planned shots.

Since my first wedding in 2007, I've learned that a restaurant wedding lives or dies by its food, and The Nash's menu is built on local, natural ingredients. Guests talk about dinner for weeks.

My tip for a Nash wedding is to plan a short walk around the block at golden hour. The low sun on those old brick walls is beautiful.
