istilldo Livestream
Thinking about eloping in the park? Start with our Banff wedding photographer page.
Some of my favourite days in 20 years of photographing weddings have had the fewest people. An elopement in Banff National Park strips everything down to what matters: two people, a promise, and some of the most dramatic scenery in the world. This istilldo wedding is a perfect example.
istilldo made it easy for this couple to have a meaningful ceremony without a year of planning. They paired it with a livestream so family who couldn't be there could watch in real time, something we're proud to offer as well. Urban Officiant (@urbanofficiant) led the ceremony, Black Earth Floral (@blackearthfloral) did the flowers, and the Stella York (@missstellayork) dress from The Bridal Boutique (@thebridalboutiqueyyc), with hair by Botega Salon (@botega.salon.gallery), looked incredible against the mountains.
We spent part of the day around Lake Minnewanka, the largest lake in Banff National Park. It's about a 10-minute drive from the town of Banff, and it gives you big open water with mountains rising on every side. Photographers are always chasing that mix of scale and intimacy, and Minnewanka delivers it.
If you're thinking about eloping in Banff, here's what I've learned since my first wedding in 2007. First, start early or stay late. The light is softer and the popular spots are quieter. Second, have a backup location. Mountain weather changes fast, and a plan B keeps the day relaxed. Third, check the park's rules before you book. Parks Canada requires a permit for ceremonies in the national park, so get that sorted ahead of time and you won't have any surprises on the day.
Most of all, leave room in the timeline to simply be together. My favourite frames from elopements are almost never the posed ones. They're the quiet moments in between, when a couple forgets the camera is there.
As a Banff wedding photographer, I've watched elopements grow from a backup plan into a first choice, and I understand why. If you're dreaming of the park, have a look at my Banff wedding photographer page and let's talk about your day.
