I photographed my first wedding in 2007, and almost every couple I've met since has asked me the same thing early on: "So... what does this actually cost?" It's a fair question, and too many photographers make you dig for the answer. So here's an honest look at Calgary wedding photography prices for 2027, what drives them up or down, and exactly what our collections cost at Tkshotz.

What Calgary Wedding Photographers Typically Charge

Wedding photography prices in Calgary vary a lot. You'll find newer photographers offering short coverage at entry-level prices, and established teams whose full-day collections cost several thousand dollars. Neither is wrong. You're paying for different things: experience, how many photographers you get, how many hours they're there, and what you take home afterward.

A few honest tips when you compare prices:

• Check whether GST is included. Many Alberta photographers, us included, list prices before GST.

• Look past the headline number. A low starting price sometimes covers only a couple of hours and one photographer.

• Ask what you actually receive. Full-size edited files and printing rights should be standard. Don't assume they are.

What Drives the Cost of Wedding Photography

Hours of coverage

This is the biggest factor. Our Premier collection covers 10–12 hours. Our other collections are built around the parts of your day rather than a set number of hours, and every package covers you through the first dance and some dancing. Ceremony and formals alone costs less than coverage that runs from getting ready right through to the dance floor. Think about which moments matter most to you. For a lot of couples, the getting-ready photos and the reception end up being their favourites.

A second photographer

With two photographers we can be in two places at once: one with each of you while you get ready, or one on the vows while the other catches your mom's reaction. Some photographers charge extra for this. At Tkshotz, every collection includes two photographers.

Travel to Banff, Canmore and the mountains

Many photographers add travel, park permit or licensing fees for mountain weddings. We don't charge travel fees for Calgary, Banff or Canmore, and we don't charge licensing or permit fees there either. Your Banff wedding or Canmore wedding costs the same as one in the city.

Albums and prints

Heirloom albums and prints are usually priced separately from coverage. Ask any photographer you're considering how their albums are priced and what you'll receive. At Tkshotz, albums are optional and range from $399 to $1,299.

Engagement sessions

An engagement session is a great way to get comfortable in front of the camera before the big day. We call ours Connection Sessions. They're $399 in Calgary or $699 in the mountains, and the price depends on the package or packages you book.

Video and extras

Adding video, film or a photo booth raises the total, though our photo booths are heavily discounted when you book them with photography, but booking everything with one team usually makes the day smoother, and we offer a discount on video when you book it with photography.

Adding a photo booth? Every Pure Portrait booth is $1,649 with a video guestbook included, and it's heavily discounted when you book it with your Tkshotz wedding. See booths and pricing on our photo booth rental Calgary page, or browse every Calgary photo booth we offer.

How to Choose the Right Calgary Wedding Photographer

1. Fall in love with their full galleries, not just a highlight reel. Ask to see a complete wedding. Our 20 Years of Weddings post is a good place to start.

2. Make sure they've shot in your kind of light and venue. A dark ballroom, a prairie farm and a mountain lake each take a different skill set. Have a look at our Saskatoon Farm wedding for a Calgary-area example.

3. Read the reviews. Look for couples talking about how the photographer made them feel, not just how the photos turned out.

4. Compare total value, not just the starting price. Count the photographers, hours, travel fees, delivery time and file rights.

5. Meet them. You'll spend more of your wedding day with your photographer than with almost anyone else, so make sure you click.

I'm honoured that Avenue Calgary readers have voted us Calgary's best wedding photographer six times. What I'm proudest of, though, is the couples who come back to us for their family photos years later. Learn more about our approach on our Calgary wedding photographer page.
