Early December in Banff has a magic all its own. The peaks wear fresh snow, the Fairmont Banff Springs is dressed for Christmas, and the whole valley feels ready for the holidays. On December 7, 2025, A + J chose that exact moment for their Banff winter wedding: vows on an outdoor terrace overlooking the Bow Valley, family photos in front of a snow-dusted mountain, and a candlelit Christmas reception that ended up full of Santa hats.

As a Calgary wedding photographer team, we make the roughly 90-minute drive west to Banff often, and the Banff Springs at Christmas never gets old. Here's how A + J's day unfolded.

Getting Ready for a Banff Christmas Wedding

Getting ready was relaxed and full of smiles. Soft daylight came through the stone-framed windows while the bride, in a white robe, had her hair curled. Judging by that grin, the nerves didn't stand a chance.

A Terrace Ceremony Above the Bow Valley

Before guests arrived, we took a few minutes to photograph the ceremony space on its own. We always try to do this, because once the chairs fill up you never see it quite like this again. Black lamp posts wrapped in string lights framed the view, two lush arrangements of red roses, cedar, eucalyptus and berries sat at the front, and snow lined the ledges above a river valley ringed by mountains.

In the late-afternoon light, A + J stood hand in hand in front of their officiant, with the peaks rising behind them. The bride read from a small book while the groom listened with a smile he couldn't hide, and a few minutes later they shared a kiss beside one of the glowing lamp posts. It's hard to imagine a more Canadian Rockies backdrop for a Fairmont Banff Springs wedding.

Family Photos and Couple Portraits in the Snow

We stayed on the terrace for portraits, where a snow-capped mountain made the backdrop for every frame. The bride wrapped up in a cozy white stole that paired beautifully with her red rose bouquet and its long burgundy ribbon, and the groom kept things classic in black with a red rose boutonniere.

December light doesn't wait around, so we kept the family groupings moving and everyone could get back inside to the warmth. In winter, having two photographers makes a real difference here.

The bridesmaids matched the season perfectly in deep red gowns and white wraps. Some of our favourite frames came from the in-between moments, like the bride laughing as a bridesmaid and a member of her wedding party planted kisses on both cheeks.

A Christmas Reception in Mount Stephen Hall

Inside, Mount Stephen Hall was glowing. From the balcony you could take in the whole room: towering windows, Christmas trees wrapped in warm lights, garland along the walls, and round tables topped with candles and evergreen centrepieces, with a small white wedding cake set beside the trees. Up close, each table had taper candles in tall glass hurricanes, pine, red berries and pine cones, plus a table number in an ornate gold frame.

Then the Santa hats came out. The wedding party made their way across the floor waving them over their heads, and the room got very festive, very fast. It's exactly the kind of moment that makes a Banff Christmas wedding so much fun to photograph.
